Gary Numan was an English new wave musician who gained his fame in the end of 1970s. The synthesizied, rhythmatic song "Cars" toppoed the UK chart in 1979 and later became no.9 hit on US chart the following year. Since then, it has been covered by several artists, and featured in many occasions. It remains Numan's only US hit till date.

This new wave/synthpop band from Toronto, Canada, has been around since the late 1970s. Despite scoring several hits in their homeland, only one of their songs gained international status. "Echo Beach" became a Top10 hit in UK in 1980. They changed their name to M+M in 1983. The group still continue to produce new recordings, but none of them became a big hit like the 1980 singles.

This British pop/new wave group was active for only a few years in the early 1980s. Their second singles broke into UK's Top20 chart in 1980, but it was their next singles that finally broke into US territory. The Dreamy "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" was a no.18 hit on Billboard Hot 100 in 1980 - and the only time they ever reach the United State.

This British synth pop group from the late 1970s was widely recognized as the pioneer of New Romantic movement in the early 1980s. They hit a breakthrough with their second singles "Fade to Grey" in 1980. This synthesized singles became a big Top10 hit in many countries across Europe. The band produced a couple more chart hits, but none became another success like "Fade to Grey".

Boomtown Rats was a punk rock band from County of Dublin, Ireland. In 1979, they released what to be known as the best work in their career. This New Zealand band was initially formed as a pop/rock band in the early 1970s. However, their first success came in the following decade with their new wave album 'True Colours' in 1980. The singles "I Got You" topped the chart in several countries, as well as no.12 in UK and later a moderate hit in US. It was their only international success, and their only US hit, until they split up in 1984.

This post-punk band was formed in Greater Manchester, England in 1977. In 1979, they produced their most famous work - "Love Will Tear Us Apart". The singles was initially failed to score on national chart, but the re-release a year later proved to be a success. The song shot to no.13 on UK chart. It was their only success before they disbanded in 1980.

The Flying Lizards was a British experimental rock band from the late 1970s. Today, they were probably best remembered from their cover version of Barrett Strong's "Money". This experimental record with the strange piano sound became a no.5 hit in UK and a no.50 hit on Billboard chart in 1980. It was their only real success until they disbanded in 1984.

When it entered the US chart in 1980, this song about a man and a picture of his love was incorrectly believed to be a song about masterbation. However, it was undeniably the most famous song of a British power pop group, The Vapors. It became a huge hit in UK and a Top40 hit in US. Sadly, all of their following songs could not catch up with the success of this one song until they disbanded in 1981.

This hard-to-pronounce British punk band was an active band since 1978. Although they continue to release their works every now and then, only one song of them received public attention. The strange, novelty record "Two Pints of Lager & a Packet of Crisps Please" became a fluke Top10 hit of UK in 1980. It remains their only chart success so far.
