There is always a comfusion on how the record label should compile an artist's compilation. Some would suggest to do it as hit singles compilation, then another would say that the singles could not tell the whole story. And they also right, since many artists do have numerous great album songs that never made it to 45rpm. This conflict also presents in Oasis's latest compilation, Time Flies.
At first glance, it looks like a good idea since Oasis already scored many hit singles in UK - more than enough to put them into compilation. With the exception of no.4 hit "Sunday Morning Call", all but one of their 26 Top20 UK hits are here on this concise 2-CD compilation. This could be called a pretty good career-span collection for this famous British band.
On the other hand, since it focus on only the singles, this collection inevitable misses several album gems and fan favourites. There is no "Cast No Shadows", "Listen Up", or "Slide Away". The only non-UK hit in this album is "Champagne Supernova", which happened to become a hit in US. Several of good B-side singles were also left out, including "Rockin' Chair", "Talk Tonight", "Acquiesce", and "The Masterplan"
Nonetheless, this collection is surely the closest to the band's definitive hit collection - since it covers most of their big hits from their first album to the most recent one. If you want to dug a little deeper, you should also buy the 1998's B-side compilation 'The Masterplan'. Beside that, this is an album that will surely satisfy most of the casual fans. |
