For someone whose career frequently produces hit-after-hit for nearly three decades, it is almost impossible from the start to compile the definitive greatest hits collection for such artist with merely 2 discs.
This attempt from Warner Bros. is, nevertheless, a good one. With 36 tracks on 2 CDs, this is probably the most compact, yet thorough, collection of Madonna's best works ever assemble. The producer's approach is quite simple - collects as many of the top40 hits as possible. The result is the album that has nearly all of her big hits from early 1980s to her latest singles in 2000. All the usual suspects are here such as "Like A Virgin", "Crazy for You", "Live to Tell", "Like A Prayer", "Vogue", "Music", "Ray of Light", and "4 Minutes". However, there are few exception including her first 2 singles ("Everybody" and "Burning Up") and the 2 most recent singles ("Miles Away" and "Celebration"), that did not reach top40 positions. Many fans may find out quickly that some of their favourites are missing, such as "Angel", "Rain", Don McLean's cover "American Pie", and Academy Award song "You Must Love Me".
The obvious flaw of this album, if you really bother by it, is the mess up, non-chronicle order sequence of the track list. If you want to start your Madonna collection or want just the hits, this is a good place to go to. Otherwise, you should go for the box set.
